Lucas Oil Stadium is one of the most technologically advanced and architecturally distinctive sports and entertainment venues in the world. Opened on August 16, 2008, at a cost of approximately $720 million, the stadium serves as the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and has quickly established itself as one of the premier event venues in the nation. Seating approximately 67,000 for football and expandable to over 70,000 for other events, the stadium covers an impressive 1.8 million square feet — nearly 2.5 times the size of its predecessor, the RCA Dome.

The stadium’s most iconic feature is its retractable roof, the first of its kind with two massive panels that can be opened in approximately 11 minutes. Each roof panel weighs approximately 2.5 million pounds and measures roughly 160 by 600 feet. Complementing the retractable roof is an operable window measuring 88 feet high by 244 feet wide, allowing natural light and fresh air to fill the stadium on pleasant days, giving spectators the feeling of an outdoor experience within an enclosed venue.

Beyond NFL football, Lucas Oil Stadium hosts a remarkable variety of events including concerts, NCAA basketball tournaments, trade shows, conventions, IHSAA tournaments, and international competitions. The stadium features 139 luxury suites, two multi-level club lounges, retractable sideline seating, two massive HD video boards, and approximately 1,550 linear feet of ribbon boards. The stadium’s exhibit halls and meeting rooms provide an additional 183,000 square feet of convention space when combined with the field, making it a versatile partner to the adjacent Indiana Convention Center. Lucas Oil Stadium has received numerous accolades, including the 2008 Sports Facility of the Year award from Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal.
