Circle Centre Mall served as one of downtown Indianapolis’s most iconic landmarks for three decades, operating as a vibrant hub of shopping, dining, and entertainment from its grand opening on September 8, 1995, until its closure on December 31, 2025. Located just south of Monument Circle at 49 West Maryland Street, the mall occupied a prime position in the heart of the city, making it a central gathering place for conventioneers, tourists, and local residents alike.

Developed by Simon Property Group at a cost of $307.5 million, Circle Centre was a masterpiece of urban retail design that incorporated nine historic building facades and portions of two historic structures, seamlessly blending contemporary retail with Indianapolis’s rich architectural heritage. The four-level mall encompassed 729,981 square feet of gross leasable area and featured over 60 retailers, popular dining establishments, a United Artists movie theater, and entertainment venues that kept visitors engaged for hours.

One of Circle Centre’s most distinctive features was its remarkable connectivity to the surrounding downtown ecosystem. Twelve hotels were directly connected to the shopping center, and the mall served as a critical link between the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, and the broader downtown entertainment district. This connectivity made Circle Centre an essential component of Indianapolis’s convention and tourism infrastructure for nearly three decades.

Following its closure, Circle Centre is being transformed into an exciting new chapter for downtown Indianapolis. Hendricks Commercial Properties has unveiled plans for Traction Yards, a dynamic mixed-use, open-air destination that will reimagine the site for the modern era, preserving the historic facades while creating new opportunities for retail, dining, entertainment, and community gathering. This redevelopment represents one of the most significant urban transformation projects in Indianapolis’s recent history.
